This is a classic trek for the first – timers keen to discover the outdoors and experience the mighty Himalayas at high altitude. High up, beyond the valley of the Bhagirathi River, is the pristine and tranquil Dodital Lake. Beyond lies the Darwa Pass (4150 mts), between the major river valleys of the Ganga and the Yamuna. A little further up from the Pass is Darwa Top (4450 mts), the highest point in the area from where it seems as though the mighty Banderpunch, Swargarohini and other peaks are close enough to be touched by an outreached hand. The trek to the pass and beyond is the traditional route used by the Gujjars(nomadic herdsmen), who take their cattle up to the meadows for greazing and also by the Sadhus (holy men) walking between the temples of Gangotri and Yamunotri.
Dodital, the lake with a lot of mythological history is a very happening trekking place at the present age. Dodital is the birth place of Lord Ganesha and is said to have witnessed the beheading of the deity by Lord Shiva. Bounded with lush greenery with crystal clear water makes this place as an ultimate place for the travel lovers and sightseers. At a height of 3307 meters above mean sea level, in the north of Uttarakashi is a perfect trekking destination and also holds potential for other adventure sports.
The trek from Dodital to Yamnotri takes you through high altitude grasslands and dense virgin forests. The scenery en-route is really astounding ! The trek for Dodital commences from Uttarkashi or Kalyani, which can be approached by motor. Kalyani to Agoda is a gradual climb through woods, fields and villages along· a mule track. The trek from Agoda to Dodi Tal is steep and through thick forests.
